Why organic for our rums?
We believe that making really good, modern spirits goes hand in hand with responsible choices.
That's why we chose to make our rums Soil Association organic when we began production two years ago, embracing a sustainable approach that leaves a lighter environmental footprint. By carefully selecting organic ingredients and adhering to organic distillation and storage practices, we ensure that every drop of our rum is free from chemical herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. Our certification also ensures full traceability from raw materials to what we sip.
But here’s the thing- it really does make a better tasting rum too!
As chefs before we turned to distilling, our bread and butter (excuse the pun) for the longest time has been seeking rounded flavour profiles, pairing, balancing, and sourcing recipes and ingredients based on seasonality, quality, provenance. Asking things like ‘is this actually decent- how has it been grown or made?’ and ‘how can I make this more delicious?’. Forever dipping a spoon in to taste and adjust along the way.
So, a little over two years ago, when we embarked on this rum making, we tasted organic and non-organic molasses (the main ingredient in our rums) side by side, and turned both into rum, just to see. The difference between them was worlds apart and, with the organic, we were more than a little bit smitten. It was richer, more complex, more… delicious.
The Soil Association’s certification process is pretty stringent, and rightly so: The SA organic hallmark has long been something trusted and we are really proud to have joined the community of organic producers who wear this badge with joy and embody the Soil Association’s philosophy. Campaigning for positive change in our food chains, developing world leading standards in creating safe and healthy food, and growing the organic market for the good of us and the environment are all included; read more about what the Soil Association get up to here.
So there you are- going organic made all sorts of sense to us from the beginning, both environmentally and flavour wise. So much so in fact that we have plans to transition our gins to organic in 2024 too, making Loveday one of only a tiny handful of entirely organic distilleries in the UK, but that’s a story for another post!
